Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral to see a psychologist?
You do not need a referral to book an appointment at Clearwater Psychology.
However, if you would like to access a Medicare rebate, you will need a referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician.
Many people choose to attend privately without a referral if they prefer not to use Medicare. Private Health Funds can also provide cover for sessions.
How do I get a Mental Health Treatment Plan?
To access Medicare rebates, you will need to book a longer appointment with your GP and request a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
During this appointment, your GP will:
Discuss your mental health concerns
Complete a brief assessment
Provide a referral to a psychologist
Create a Mental Health Treatment Plan
Once you have this referral, you can send it to Clearwater Psychology before your first appointment.
How many Medicare sessions can I access?
With a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates for up to 10 psychology sessions per calendar year.
Typically:
First referral covers 6 sessions
GP review required for additional 4 sessions
Medicare rebates are processed after payment.
What is the Medicare rebate for a Clinical Psychologist?
If you have a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan, you may be eligible for a Medicare rebate for clinical psychology services.
Your out-of-pocket cost will depend on your session fee and rebate amount.
If you have private health insurance, you may also wish to check whether you are eligible for rebates under your extras cover.
